The Sonya Chernysh Trio based in Bern, CH was formed in February 2024, featuring pianist and composer Sonya Chernysh accompanied by Marcel Maffli on double bass, and Damien Kuntz on drums. Taken by the instant connection of this band, Sonya was inspired to develop this group and its sound even further through her unique compositional approach and arrangements.
Since 2022, Sonya Chernysh has had to grapple with starting life over in a new country after fleeing her home, Odessa, due to the war in Ukraine. However, this transition provided Sonya the opportunity to pursue her work as a composer and pianist without fearing for her life.

The sound of this group draws considerable influence from traditional and modern jazz styles and Sonya’s classical music upbringing. Her compositions express nostalgia for a pre-war childhood and introspection on her rapidly changing life in a new country. Her trio’s intuitive approach helps breath life into her pieces and express Sonya’s experience with listeners.
In 2024, the trio recorded its first studio session and performed at the Pop-Up Festival Bern as well as at the Langnau Jazz Nights. In spring 2025, they made their debut at the International Jazz Festival Bern. The trio remains active on the Swiss jazz scene.
